What makes a Lithium Ion Battery safe? Insights on the BMS

Lithium Ion Batteries are a mega trend in the material handling industry. Li-Ion batteries provide many advantages: More power, extreme short charging times and maintenance free operation. How does EP Equipment ensure safety and a long lifetime for their Lithium Ion Batteries? EP Equipment li-ion batteries are produced in our own factory and equipped with our own in-house developed BMS – Battery Management System to ensure the longest life time of the battery and safe operation. In this article we will explain the importance of a BMS for the Battery and Truck:

An important part of the lithium-ion technology is the battery management system. Why?

The task of the BMS is monitoring the condition of the battery and controlling input- and output currency with the truck and charger.

We all heard stories about li-ion batteries catching fire. The cause is overheating, mostly while charging. A good charger is not enough to prevent this. The BMS communicates with the battery, with the truck and with the charger and continuously monitors the temperature. The BMS kicks in when the temperature is out of range.

The lifetime of a li-ion battery strongly depends on its operating conditions. Too hot or too cold reduces the life time of the battery. The BMS therefore prevents the battery from overheating during usage. And the BMS does more: Charging is optimized and charging and discharging cycles are stored in its memory. To use the full potential of li-ion technology,

EP Equipment designs its trucks around the possibilities of the batteries. According to the company design philosophy of simple, compact and efficient trucks. The EPT 12EZ is last year’s most bought li-ion truck in the world. The in-house development and production of our trucks, batteries and battery controllers, ensures a reliable and consistent quality and a safe and efficient operation.

When looking for a new, Li-Ion electric pallet truck, always make sure you ask for the BMS system. And if you want to be on the safe side, buy an EP Equipment Lithium Ion pallet truck!

EPT 12EZ electric pallet truck independant test report

As published in September 2017, Theo Egberts from Buro Andersom and Logisticsinside tested the EPT 12EZ electric pallet truck against its competitors. Of course we are very excited to find out more about the results as our truck is compared with the well known brands Jungheinrich, with the EJE M15 series and Toyotas LWE 130. The test is the first of its kind and compares trucks designed to satisfy the growing need for entry level products with a focus on delivery application and the retail environment.

The competitive field

Our truck is facing a tough competition with the Toyota / BT LWE 130, priced at 3.540€ and the Jungheinrich EJE M15, priced at 2.888€.

The EPT 12EZ comes in two Versions (BASIC and PRO) at prices from around 1.500€ – 1.800€ depending on specifications. For this reason we are even more curious on how our truck stands against the higher priced competition.

While all of the competitors trucks use gel batteries, the EPT 12EZ from EP Equipment uses an easily exchangeable Lithium Ion Battery with the advantages of opportunity charging, faster charging, lower weight and a longer battery lifetime. In addition to those advantages the self weight of the EPT 12EZ with  only 130Kg is lower than its competitors from Jungheinrich (219Kg) and Toyota (250Kg) which enables the truck to be used on every kind of taillift. Also, the EPT 12EZ is the same size as a manual hand pallet truck and can therefore be maneuvered very easily through narrow aisles and inside of HGVs.

The raw results

As an independent test institution Buro Andersom developed a standarised test that all three trucks from EP Equipment, Toyota and Jungheinrich went through. This test anticipates the real life situation, that has to be handled by a truck of the entry level segment.

Supplier Model Price Pallets / hour km/h with load kWh per 100 pallets
EP Equipment EPT 12EZ PRO 1.800 € 66,98 4,93 0,24
Jungheinrich EJE M15 2.888 € 66,36 5,07 0,3
Toyota LWE 130 3.540 € 70,24 4,74 0,24

Sources: Logisticsinside.eu (EPT 12EZ test); Logisticsinside.eu (Toyota LWE130 test); Logisticsinside.nl (Jungheinrich EJE M15 test)

It can be seen by the raw data provided in the tests from Logisticsinside.eu, that all trucks showed very similar performance data. While the Toyota LWE 130 truck has some advantage in the amounts of pallets shifted per hour, the Jungheinrich EJE M15 and the EP Equipment 12EZ have a higher top speed. In terms of energy efficiency the EPT 12EZ and the EJE M15 show advantages over the Toyota truck which is using more kWh per 100 pallets.

EP Equipment is proud that the EPT 12EZ has been tested to achieve the same performance level as the more expensive trucks from the competition while offering a very intersting package including state of the art lithium Ion technology, lower self weight and the most compact chassis on the market. EP Equipment breaking its own sales record from last years 11.11

Have you heard of the Black Friday equivalent in China called 11.11? It is the number one day for online sales in China and EP Equipment just broke its own record from last year.

Starting the day with a bike race in our hometown of Anji, a beautiful region of bamboo forests and celebrating the day of 11.11 together with 400 partners from all over China representing our dealers, customers and partners, we welcomed our friends in our factory and continued the day discussing new products, visions and trends in the industry.

During the ceremony our Ecommerce Division – iMow Industry started a 24 hours sales marathon with special opportunities for our customers throughout China.

After the success of our 2016 campaign, it was a tough challenge to increase our 11.11 sales once again, but the numbers speak for themselves: EP Equipment sold a record of 5.478 trucks in one day with a revenue of near 14 Million USD.

Presenting a revolutionary Counterbalance truck

At EP Equipment we believe that revolutionary products can change the market and in the past years we proved our vision with our EPT 20-15ET, the worldwide most selling electric pallet truck.

On this years 11.11. ceremony we introduced the L1, a revolutionary Counterbalance truck that has the potential to change the

market once again. By using state of the art Lithium Ion technology, EP Equipment was able to change the design process completely, setting a new level of ergonomics in the driver cabin.

And again, the numbers speak for themselves: On introduction day, EP Equipment signed orders of near 500 units on the

celebration ceremony alone. We are looking forward to see the L1 succeed within China and the world market.

EP Equipment introducing more revolutionary Li-Ion Products in 2018

Within the next 12 month EP Equipment has several products lined up for release that have the potential to change the industry once again with a radical change in concept and design around the Lithium Ion Battery. Stay tuned to find out more.

New sales and production record in 2017

The year 2017 will be another mile stone in the history of EP Equipment. Outperforming our already ambitious target, we expect to break the magic line of 50.000 units both in production and sales.

EP and iMow truly appreciate all of our partners’ support for the successful gathering this year. We are looking forward to see you all again very soon to celebrate the next mile stones as EP Equipment will continue its journey.

Buro Andersom testing day with JX1 order picker and EPT 12EZ electric pallet truck

Buro Andersom is the source of expertise when it comes to forklift truck testing. As an independent institution, Andersom Testing is testing forklift trucks, pallet trucks and other material handling products from all leading brands in the market.

The results are published on the Buro Andersom own websites www.logisticsinside.eu and www.logisticsinside.nl and for many years we find the results of this testing in various well known magazines in Europe such as Foerdern + Heben.

As an independent institution, Theo Egberts is testing forklift trucks, pallet trucks and other material handling products from all leading brands in the market. For many years we find the results of this testing in various well known magazines in Europe such as Foerdern + Heben, and on www.logisticsinside.eu.  In September 2017 he is testing two EP Equipment products.

The tests take place at a logistics company with a focus on urban logistics as well as order picking for e-commerce fulfillment. In this process, food supplements are put together for each individual customer and many items have to be single picked. The ideal place for our JX1 small goods order picker.

Our JX1 is a compact vertical order picker with a lifting height of 4.88 meter to support this task. The JX1 also offers many advantages compared to other order picking trucks. Check out the the JX1 Website to find out more.

Theo Egberts tests our JX1 based on the standardized test track used already for other medium level order picking trucks. By doing so, maximum comparability between products and competitors is assured.

During the test the energy consumption is tracked with an external device while the truck is performing the standard defined work cycles on the test track at standard truck settings.

From our own experience, the JX1 is giving a good performance and will confirm its position as a user friendly- and high productivity vertical order picker for the E-Commerce- and small goods picking environment.

We are looking forward seeing the test results later this year at Logistics Inside

After testing the JX1, the test team prepared the EPT 12EZ  for testing. The EPT 12EZ pallet truck is our all new and revolutionary electric pallet truck Again, this pallet truck is tested under the same, standard testing environment as all competitors’ trucks and we are very much looking forward to the results. Traveling with various loads, the truck is tested under real life conditions.

From our own experience, the EPT 12EZ electric pallet truck has several advantages compared to other trucks when it comes to urban logistics as well as retail environment. Due to its small size it does not block aisles in retail shops and is easy and safe to maneuver in small working areas. Another application for this truck lies in the Urban logistics sector. Because of its light weight, the EPT 12EZ can be easily loaded to any delivery truck. Due to the limited capacity of a taillift, many electric pallet trucks can not be used on lorries. With a weight of only 130Kg the EPT 12EZ is optimal for this application.

We are very interested to see how our products will rate on the test. We will keep you updated.

Lithium Ion Battery testing at EP Equipment

Using state of the art technology has always been a core part of the DNA of EP Equipment.

Since the launch of our full electric hand pallet truck EPT 12EZ, the presence of Lithium Ion Batteries in our production has increased heavily. Many manufacturers have started to use Lithium Ion technology to power electric pallet trucks in the past years, but only very few really went ahead and developed trucks that take full advantage of the great features of Lithium Ion Batteries. With the EPT 12EZ we developed a completely new generation pallet truck that has a weight of only 120Kg including the Battery. A weight, that no other supplier of industry trucks has achieved until now. Due to its low weight and the highly efficient components, the pallet truck can run for up to 3 hours with a fully charged battery and needs only 2.5hours to charge to 100%. Another advantage is the possibility of opportunity charging. The daily routine in factories and logistics companies can be optimised by a more flexible charging routine then before.

All of this is only possible due to the state of the art technology of our Lithium Ion Batteries!

To ensure a stable and high quality, every individual battery is assembled and tested in our own facilities in the main factory in Anji. Every lithium Ion Battery from EP comes with our own BMS (Battery Management System) that ensures the perfect symbiosis between the truck and the battery. After assembly, several charging and discharging cycles are monitored and analysed by our quality control team before the shippment of the Battery. In case of any failure in terms of voltage, capacity or temperature, individual cells are controlled and replaced immediately.

We do our best to supply innovative solutions on a high quality level for you.

EP US Company Big Joe reports record quarter strong interest at Promat 2017

EP US Company Big Joe reports record quarter strong interest at Promat 2017

2017-04-25

Fueled by a complete update of the Big Joe product line over the past few years and several new innovative products, strong sales continued for the brand in the first quarter of 2017.  Now in their eighth consecutive year of double digit growth, the company reports that the first quarter was another record for the firm and being led by sales of  the JX1 task support vehicle.
The JX1 or « Joey » has been a hit for Big Joe since it was introduced at Promat in 2013.  Over the past four years Joey sales have continued to grow as has the number of models in the series.  The Joey line-up now features 5 different models which includes JX1 units that reach elevations of 192″ and new JX2 mini order pickers that feature forks forward operation.
Earlier this month at ProMat 2017 in Chicago, Big Joe invited attendees to drive the whole slate of Joey vehicles in a faux warehouse within their showcase which was again very well received by visitors.  « I am not sure if it is the techno music or seeing people up in the air enjoying driving our vehicles, but the Joey continues to get a ton of interest at the show », said Bill Pedriana the CMO of Big Lift LLC.  « We now have dozens and dozens of requests for demos to facilitate across North America, which will keep us extremely busy over the next few months – a nice problem to have of course », continued Pedriana.
Also at ProMat, Big Joe caught the attention of attendees with a number of other machines slated to be introduced over the next few years.  A new series of innovative products designed to replace many common material handling items was especially popular.  Featuring removable lithium ion battery packs, Big Joe showcased electric powered versions of a two-wheel hand truck, a compact step ladder, and a next generation pallet truck called the e25 expected to be to market later this year.
On Wednesday at Promat, the company announced the winner of their « Let’s Make Some Noise » Joey promotion which included the award of a Harley Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle to Jowell Mariano of Big Joe Handling Systems in Hayward, California.  The announcement was live streamed on Facebook from the ProMat show floor during which Jowell was called with the good news.  « This has to be some kind of April Fool’s day joke! », proclaimed an excited Mariano who was randomly awarded the bike by simply quoting the Joey earlier in the year.
« Our whole team was excited all week with what we are doing and by the interest we were getting from end users, dealer and competitors alike.  Having Jowell win the Harley and being so excited and surprised was so fitting for who we are becoming as a company, we »re having fun, » concluded Pedriana.
